Nicki and Katelyn met on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Old Cabell Hall and went to Starbucks on the Corner.
Nicki: Signing up was one of those “I’m a fourth-year — I need to take advantage of every possible resource U.Va. has to offer” moments.
Katelyn: Honestly, my roommate signed me up. I was reluctant at first, but then I agreed because I didn’t think I would get selected.
Nicki: I [had] not been on a blind date before. I had no major expectations. I hoped there wouldn’t be any awkwardness, but other than that, I didn’t know what to expect.
Katelyn: I laughed a bit because it had been a year [since I submitted my survey]. I had totally forgotten [my friend] even signed me up, so when I got the text, I freaked out a bit. I called my friends and was like, “OH MY GOD, WHAT DO I DO?” and then they convinced me to go.
Nicki: She was pretty much the only one standing outside. I was a little late, so I immediately said sorry. [We] decided on where to go and started walking.
Katelyn: He was late, so I almost left. It was pretty chilly outside. But then when he arrived, we went on our way to Starbucks.
Nicki: She looked like she was a little hesitant as I was walking up, so I tried to make her as comfortable as possible.
Katelyn: He seemed really polite and like a nice guy. He asked if I was hungry and what I wanted to do on our date. I was excited to get to know him a bit.
Nicki: I asked her if she wanted to get dinner, but she said she had already eaten, so we decided to go to Starbucks.
Katelyn: Normally, I am usually the one driving a conversation, but this one was really easy. We both had a lot to share and had a really engaging conversation.
Nicki: We talked about the craziest thing we’ve done at U.Va. My first year, I ran through my chem lecture dressed [as] a banana [and was] chased by a gorilla costume [as part of] an agreement with my roommates.
Katelyn: I don’t know that we had a whole lot in common, but we were both great conversationalists. And I guess, because we both cared about what the other was saying, it was like we had things in common.
Nicki: I wouldn’t say there was too much flirting. I think more of a friend vibe.
Katelyn: I don’t think there was a romantic connection, but I would love to continue to get to know each other as friends.
Nicki: She was getting bombarded by texts [saying] she was late to a study group. On the way out, she said, “Make sure you don’t say anything bad about me in the newspaper or I’ll come find you.”
Katelyn: He offered to pay, but I said no.
Nicki: I wouldn’t see myself going out with her again in a date sense, but I thought she was really cool, so if I ever came across her again I would definitely hang out with her.
Katelyn: I don’t believe in rankings. I had a nice time, and that’s what matters.
Nicki: I would rate the date a solid 7.
