The Skinny on Virginia wrestling, swim and dive, and cross country

A skinny on weekend competition for the cross country, wrestling, and swim and dive teams. Full previews for the men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and women's soccer weekend matchups are also available online.

Cross Country Skinny

What: 2014 NCAA Southeast Regional Championship

Where: E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park; Louisville, Kentucky

When: Friday, Nov. 14; 12 p.m.

Virginia cross country is sending both its men’s and women’s teams to the Southeast Regional Championship — the final step before NCAAs.

The No. 28 Virginia men look to move on from a disappointing fourth-place finish at the ACC Championships two weeks ago. Virginia finished second at last year’s Southeast Regional and will strive to qualify as a team for the NCAA championship for the fourth consecutive season.

Three of the 37 teams in the men’s race are ranked alongside the Cavaliers. Furman is 16th, NC State is 18th, and North Carolina is ranked 22nd.

The No. 14 Virginia women are set to defend their Southeast Regional crown, which they have won four times since 2008. The No. 11 Tar Heels and No. 18 Wolfpack are the other nationally ranked teams in the field.

The top two teams and the top four individuals from each race receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Thirteen other teams will receive at-large bids.

Wrestling

What: No. 10 Virginia vs. No. 23 North Dakota State & Gardner-Webb

Where: Memorial Gymnasium

When: Saturday, Nov. 15; 12 p.m.

Tenth-ranked Virginia wrestling continues the dual meet portion of its schedule with matchups against 23rd-ranked North Dakota State and Gardner-Webb.

The Bison are the first ranked opponents for the Cavaliers this season, and have five wrestlers ranked in the top 30 of their weight classes.

Virginia has seven wrestlers in the top 20, including No. 10 sophomore George DiCamillo and No. 14 Joe Spisak who both were champions at last week’s Hokie Open.

Saturday’s contest against the Runnin’ Bulldogs will be the fifth meeting of the two teams in the past six years. None of the prior bouts were close — the Cavaliers have an average margin of victory of 44.25 — and Saturday should be no different.

Swim and Dive

What: Virginia men (1-2) vs. No. 3 NC State (3-0, 2-0 ACC); No. 7. Virginia women (1-1) vs. No. 21 NC State (2-1, 2-0 ACC)

Where: The Aquatic and Fitness Center

When: Saturday, 3 p.m. (Diving at 1 p.m.)

The Virginia swimming and diving teams take on ACC rivals NC State as they return home for this weekend’s match against the Wolfpack.

The event will kick off on the diving boards, shortly before the two teams clash in swimming. In their last dive meet against NC State, the Cavaliers netted victories in both men's and women’s diving. Then-sophomores Becca Corbett and Katie Warburg earned first and second place in the women’s 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively. Then-junior JB Kolod secured two victories in the both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

In the two teams’ last encounter, Virginia split its meet with NC State as the women’s team beat the Wolfpack 178.5-115.5, while the men were defeated 157-141. Then-freshman Leah Smith, then-sophomore Hanne Borgersen, and then-senior Rachel Naurath formed a 1-2-3 sweep in the women’s 500 free, while then-seniors Brad Phillips and Jan Daniec finished 1-2 in the men’s 500 and 1,000 free.

The meet with NC State marks the first conference matchup for the Cavaliers this season. After losing to both Michigan and Penn State in last weekend’s dual meet, the men’s team is hoping to turn their performance around. The women’s team split its meet last week as it defeated Michigan 184.5-168.5, but fell to Penn State 183-170. The women’s team hopes to start off its conference play with a victory.

Virginia hopes to hand the Wolfpack their first men’s loss and second loss overall in swimming. In contrast, NC State aims to build on the momentum of sweeping both Florida State and Georgia Tech in their dual swim meet a few weeks ago.
