Cavaliers will reap rewards from Pennsylvania

Virginia track and field competed at the Penn Relays April 23-25. Cavalier athletes measured up to an elite pool in a number of events, though they were unable to come away with any wins.

Sophomore Filip Mihaljevic almost ended this drought on the final day. His mark of 63.11 meters in the discus, which shattered the school record he set last weekend by over two meters, was only short of LSU senior and All-American Rodney Brown’s.

In June, Brown will contend for a national championship in the discus and have a shot at bringing home the hardware. On Saturday, Mihaljevic proved he could do the same.

A day earlier, Mihaljevic finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 19.24 meters. His school-record mark of 20.16 from last weekend would’ve made him runner up. Senior Darrell Hill, a second-team All American last season for Penn State, won with a mammoth throw of 20.79 meters.

Had he made that toss in the 2012 Beijing Olympic finals, Hill would have claimed seventh place. Mihaljevic has another two years to reach Hill’s level.

Also in competition Friday, the 4x200 relay of senior Jordan Lavender, junior Peyton Chaney, sophomore Tori McKenzie, and freshman Kiana Hairston got tenth overall. The group’s mark of 1:37.89 was .18 seconds away from earning a spot in the finals.

In the loaded women’s high jump, senior Moira Cronin added a tenth-place finish. Her distance of 1.70 meters was .16 off of the first place mark of five-time senior All American Jeannelle Scheper’s mark.

On the first day, four Cavaliers — senior Sarah DeVita, sophomore Sara Sargent, graduate student Iona Lake, and freshman Megan Rebholz — produced top-5 finishes in the pole vault, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and Olympic Development 5000m respectively.

The best of the best were in action at the Penn Relays. Virginia athletes did not shy away from this challenge. They gave great efforts and set commendable marks. Their futures hold plenty of victories.
