Virginia tennis stars senior Danielle Collins, senior Ryan Shane and junior Luca Corinteli came up big last Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Malibu Racquet Club in Malibu Calif., taking titles in singles and doubles, respectively, at the inaugural Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament, the first national collegiate championship of the fall season.
One of 16 top-tier women’s singles players competing at the event, Collins — currently ranked No. 8 in the Oracle/ITA national rankings — defeated three top-20 opponents to take the crown: No. 18 junior Rachel Pierson, from Texas A&M; No. 13 sophomore Sinead Lohan, from Miami; and No. 4 junior Maegan Manasse, from California.
Her opponent in Sunday’s final — North Carolina No. 9 junior Hayley Carter — defaulted, giving Collins the title by walkover. Collins previously won the 2014 NCAA singles championship, topping California senior Lynn Chi in a straight-sets final.
Shane and Corinteli, meanwhile, took home the men’s doubles title, downing junior Guilherme Hadlich and freshman Gabriel Sidney — a duo from Pepperdine — for the championship. At present No. 2 in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings, Shane and Corinteli also edged Texas Christian University sophomores Cameron Norrie and Guillermo Nuñez in a first-round nail-biter. The Virginia duo pushed past Florida State seniors Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez in the semis.
“It was a lot of fun to come out here and it was one of the most beautiful places I've been able to play tennis at,” Corinteli said. “We were lucky enough to be invited to this tournament, so you know, it was a joy from the beginning to the end, and to end the tournament this way is pretty awesome.”
Additionally, Shane claimed the consolation title in men’s singles. The reigning NCAA men’s singles champion, Shane dropped out of the main draw with a first-round loss to Texas Tech senior Felipe Soares before posting two consolation-bracket victories — the second against top-ranked Oklahoma senior Axel Alvarez.
