There comes a moment in every young artist’s career where the gap between up-and-coming and hit artist begins to close. For most, this moment comes with a certain single or album that tops the charts. For Luke Christopher, a young singer-rapper from Los Angeles, this moment may be soon arriving. Christopher’s recent music video release of “They Know”, a single on his new EP “TMRW,” has garnered a good amount of attention from fans who have been watching his work and are familiar with his ascent as an artist. “They Know” and the rest of the “TMRW” EP as a whole foster Christopher’s launch into the next level of his career.
The “They Know” music video opens with a promising tune. The music fades into the hook while Christopher croons of his devotion to his girl. Christopher sings, “There's nothing they could do, ‘cause there's nothing they could do, ‘cause they know I f*** with you” as the camera looks through the point of view of the lucky lady he is singing to. Throughout the video Christopher humorously fends off groupies and attempts to keep the camera’s attention to prove his loyalty.
The video’s easygoing and humorous attitude presents Christopher as a charismatic young rapper who won’t be disappointed in the music industry should he rise to fame — he’s already over it. The video serves not so much to support the song as it does to showcase Christopher. With each assurance of his devotion he seems more convincing and genuine, as he lyrically moves from cracking jokes about a having a threesome with Rihanna to noting the shallowness of such attention — “But that ain't love, then girl I'm done for you.”
Christopher shows himself to be a thoughtful songwriter who is learning to perfect the balance of wit, humor and insight with sounds that make such introspection seem effortless and carefree. “They Know” is probably the most unassuming but catchy single on “TMRW.” Even though Christopher’s other songs better showcase his storytelling talents as a rapper, “They Know” serves its purpose as a charged introduction to this new artist. Only time will tell if “They Know” and “TMRW” will be able to push Christopher from good to great.
