U.Va. Health System receives commendation for palliative care

Recognition an "incredible honor," says palliative care specialist

The University Health System was named as one of 11 palliative care centers in the U.S.

The Center to Advance Palliative Care selects leadership centers based on clinical excellence, leadership, reputation and experience, according to a press release from the University Health System.

The University's palliative care team helps patients with severe illnesses or who are receiving intensive medical treatments to improve their quality of life by offering emotional support, holistic care and symptom management.

The honor is particularly significant because of the center’s status as a nationally-recognized organization supporting growth in palliative care, said Dr. Joshua Barclay, a University palliative care specialist.

“To be recognized as a leader in this field by CAPC is an incredible honor for us at U.Va.,” Barclay said in the release.

The palliative care team includes a variety of providers — not limited to doctors and nurses — such as social workers, nutritionists, music therapists, chaplains, massage therapists and psychologists.

"We have steadily expanded our services with support from leadership at the U.Va. Medical Center, School of Medicine and School of Nursing,” Barclay said. “This has resulted in family-centered care which is effectively integrated into the comprehensive care provided at U.Va.”
