The Virginia volleyball team had a rough weekend as it went 0-2 and suffered a deep blow to its NCAA tournament chances. The Cavaliers were looking to close out the regular season with two wins in order to better their chances of reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Virginia (18-13, 10-10 ACC) had come into the weekend having won three of their last four matches with their only loss coming against a red hot North Carolina team. Despite the loss being 3-0, Virginia still displayed the type of intensity, focus and grit that it rediscovered over its last couple of games.
The loss against Pittsburgh Friday night prevented the team from starting off its final weekend of the regular season the way it wanted. Virginia ended up dropping the match against the Panthers (23-9, 13-7 ACC) by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15).
The Cavaliers looked to bounce back Saturday night against rival Virginia Tech but ended up losing a close fought match in five sets. The 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 15-7) loss against the Hokies (19-13, 10-10 ACC) ended Virginia’s regular season.
Virginia will finish the regular season with one more win and one less loss than it had during the 2014-15 season. The Cavaliers finished the season with a superb record at home, going 10-3, but struggled on the road with a 5-9 record.
