The eighth-ranked women’s tennis team completed a sweep of the their bracket of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, defeating both BYU and Columbia. The team will now move on to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin early next month.

The Cavaliers played host to Maryland, BYU and Columbia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville for the two-day weekend event, which was part of the national ITA Kickoff Weekend. The winner of each regional bracket advances alongside Virginia to the National Team Indoor Championships.

Over the weekend, Virginia dropped just a single point combined in their two matches, starting off the weekend Friday afternoon by blanking BYU in singles and doubles play for a 7-0 victory. This advanced them to the finals match against Columbia, a match the Cavaliers took in stride with a resounding 6-1 victory.

The opening match against BYU was highlighted by senior Stephanie Nauta’s 100th career singles victory, 6-4, 6-1. It also featured the doubles teams losing one game combined between the three separate teams of Danielle Collins/Meghan Kelley, Julia Elbaba/Skylar Morton and Stephanie Nauta/Victoria Olivarez.

The victory over BYU pitted Virginia against Columbia in the finals match of the bracket, who, after defeating Maryland in their first round match, fell hard to Virginia, 6-1. The win, however, included a three-set loss Nauta suffered in her singles match, a sole blemish for the Cavaliers.

Before Virginia heads to Madison, Wis. in hopes of bringing home a team indoor title, the Cavaliers seek to extend their streak of three consecutive victories to begin the 2016 calendar year when they host South Carolina this coming Friday.
