The No. 4 Virginia women’s lacrosse team lost its first game of the season against No. 12 Princeton Saturday, 14-7.
Midfielder Posey Valis, attacker Besser Dyson and attacker Kelly Reese, all juniors, each scored two goals for Virginia (1-1) in the defeat at Princeton. Sophomore midfielder Kasey Behr additionally chipped in one goal.
The game went back-and-forth for the majority of the day, as the Cavaliers held the lead multiple times in the first half. However, Princeton (1-0) was in front at halftime, 7-5, after it scored two goals in the first half’s final 10 seconds.
The game remained competitive to start the second half, but after a Valis goal for Virginia with 18:14 left cut Princeton’s lead to 9-7, the Tigers responded by scoring five unanswered goals to end the game.
Virginia outshot Princeton 27-22, but the Cavaliers had a lot of difficulty converting those shots into goals against Princeton junior goalie Ellie Degarmo. Degarmo made 13 saves, including eight in the second half.
Virginia now looks to bounce back Wednesday when it plays its home opener against Richmond.
The Spiders are 2-0 this season with wins against Liberty and Mercer. Richmond returns five starters from last year’s team that finished second in the Atlantic 10.
Virginia defeated the Spiders last season 14-6, and in the game current Virginia captain senior Mary Alati scored three goals.
Virginia also plays again at home Saturday against No. 7 Penn State in what will be a rematch of last year’s NCAA Second Round game.
Penn State is 2-0 with wins against Lehigh and Duquesne. It will be the third ranked opponent for the Cavaliers in their last four games.
