The Virginia softball team had a solid weekend, finishing 3-2 at the USC Upstate Tournament in Spartanburg and Greenville, S.C.
On Friday, the Cavaliers (6-9, 0-0 ACC) played host USC Upstate and Ohio. Virginia freshman pitcher Erika Osherow struggled against the Spartans (11-2, 0-0 ASC), giving up 11 runs. The Cavaliers struggled to get their offense going and fell to the Spartans 11-1. Against the Bobcats (6-3, 0-0 MAC), Virginia sophomore first baseman Danni Ingraham led the way for the Cavaliers, hitting a pair of home runs en route to a close fought 8-7 victory.
On Saturday, Virginia went 1-1, beating La Salle 6-3 and losing to Ohio 3-2. A pair of juniors, catcher Katie Park and outfielder Iyana Hughes, helped spark the Cavalier offense against the Explorers (0-4, 0-0 A-10) as they batted in four and two runs, respectively. Virginia lost a tough game to finish off Saturday, losing on a walk off single to the Bobcats.
The Cavaliers concluded their weekend on a high note, dominating Furman 9-1. The Paladins (7-9, 0-0 SoCon) could not get anything going as they fell behind from the get-go, allowing Virginia to score seven unanswered runs in the first three innings. Furman was unable to recover, and the Cavaliers won their third game of the weekend.
Virginia will look to build off this weekend and gain momentum as they travel to Wilmington, N.C. next weekend for the UNCW Tournament.
