The No. 4 Virginia women’s rowing team competed in their first home race Saturday against No. 6 Yale on the Rivanna Reservoir. The Cavaliers won four out of five races over the Bulldogs.
Virginia’s Varsity Eight boat finished in 6:28.4, edging Yale by little over a second. The Cavalier lineup consisted of junior coxswain Colette Lucas-Conwell, senior stroke Hannah Solis-Cohen, freshman Heidi Long in 7 seat, junior Erin Briggs in 6 seat, junior Georgia Ratcliff in 5 seat, senior Tessa Dikkers in 4 seat, senior Mackenzi Sherman in 3 seat, sophomore Alice Darry in 2 seat and senior Sam Casto in bow seat.
Long, the only freshman in the A boat, hails from Buckinghamshire, England and lays claim to the title of Junior British National Champion. Darry is a native of West Melton, New Zealand and transferred to Virginia from UCLA, where she rowed in their top boat her freshman year.
The Second Varsity Eight boat also defeated Yale (6:39.7), with a time of 6:35.1. The First Varsity Four race secured Yale’s only victory on the afternoon, as Virginia finished in 7:19.0 to the Bulldog’s time of 7:11.4.
The Cavaliers fielded two boats in both the Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Four races. The Virginia A boat (7:20.4) in the Second Varsity Four race finished nine seconds ahead of Yale, with the Cavalier B boat following the Bulldogs. For the Third Varsity Four race, the Virginia B boat came out on top with a time of 7:24.3, ahead of both Yale and Cavalier A.
Virginia’s strong performance against a top-ranked team sets the tone for the spring racing schedule, which resumes April 2 in Columbus, Ohio against No. 1 Ohio State and No. 11 Michigan. The Cavaliers will also travel to Clemson and Texas in April to face elite competition they will likely see again at the NCAA Championships in May.
