University baseball team driver Bernard Martin died soon after arriving at Mercy Hospital late Thursday afternoon, according to The Daily Progress.

Martin, 72, lost consciousness while driving the baseball team to Miami, leading to a bus accident. The bus swerved off U.S. Route 1 and crashed, hitting three parked cars and a motor scooter.

Baseball staff members intervened to control the bus and perform CPR on Martin until the rescue team arrived.

The Daily Progress reports Martin, a Lynchburg native, had been a longtime driver for various Cavalier athletic teams.

The University baseball team expressed their condolences on their Twitter page, writing, “Our condolences to the family of Bernard Martin, our bus driver who passed away Thursday. He was a great friend and supporter of U.Va. Athletics.”
