The No. 3 Virginia women’s rowing team won 12 of 15 races this weekend at the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell in S.C. The Cavaliers competed against 20 teams over three sessions of racing with seven of them in the top-20 — No. 4 Ohio State, No. 8 Texas, No. 10 Michigan, No. 13 Indiana, No. 14 Washington State, No. 19 Syracuse, and No. 20 Louisville.
The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight won two out of three races, losing only to the reigning national champion Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon. Virginia finished in 6:19.7, second to Ohio State’s 6:15.4. In their two winning races, the Cavalier Varsity Eight beat all competition by at least five seconds.
The lineup included junior coxswain Colette Lucas-Conwell, senior Tessa Dikkers in stroke seat, junior Georgia Ratcliff in 7 seat, sophomore Eliza Spilsbury in 6 seat, freshman Heidi Long in 5 seat, junior Erin Briggs in 4 seat, senior Jennifer Reid in 3 seat, sophomore Alice Darry in 2 seat and senior Sam Casto in bow seat.
The First Varsity Four was undefeated in its three races, finishing ahead of all six of the top-20 crews it competed against. The Third Varsity Eight boat was also 3-0, and edged all seven top-20 crews.
The Second Varsity Four lost by less than one second to Michigan, with a time of 7:20.3 to the Wolverines’ 7:19.7 on Sunday. Virginia placed first in both Saturday heats. The Second Varsity Eight also won two of three races and fell only by two seconds to Ohio State.
The Cavaliers’ final regular season race before the ACC and NCAA championships is April 30 in Austin, Texas.
