Competing fresh off the Virginia Challenge — one of the most nationally competitive outdoor track and field meets of the year — a limited representation of the Virginia outdoor track and field teams competed at the Highlander Invitational at Radford, Va. this past weekend.
Even with smaller numbers, the No. 4 Virginia men put up a strong showing in the last regular season meet of the season. On the track side, freshman Devin Barnes and sophomore Logan Carrington placed second and third, respectively, in the 800 meters. Additionally, freshman Emmanuel Jackson placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, and freshman Jake Dixon finished fourth in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 48.85.
In the field events, Virginia didn’t have as much representation. However, sophomore James Williams put up an impressive showing. Achieving a mark of 50.98 meters in the hammer throw, the Radford, Va. native took third in the event.
Meanwhile, the Virginia women won several events at this meet. In the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Ciara Leonard won with a time of 13.63 — the second-best time ever recorded by a Cavalier freshman. Sophomore Holly Sullivan took home first in the 400-meter hurdles.
One notable event in particular for the Virginia women at the meet was the 200 meters. Senior Peyton Chaney led the charge with a second-place finish, and four of her teammates swept the following four spots.
With the regular season completed, the Cavaliers will compete in the ACC Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. May 13-15. The Virginia women will try to improve upon their ninth-placed finish last year. For the male Cavaliers, this meet represents an important opportunity to avenge a second-placed finish from last year and capture their first conference title since 2009.
