Amazon, Hulu and Netflix are no longer the cutting-edge, new television platforms they were a year ago. Some shows have returned with a lesser quality — for example, “unReal” — and this year of TV has not been as impressive as 2015. However, there are still some must-watch programs to anticipate. Here are four returning and four new shows premiering this fall.
“Black Mirror” (Netflix)
“Black Mirror” — the critically-acclaimed science fiction anthology series — returns for its third season with a new home after Netflix bought the rights to the show away from UK Channel 4. It also has increased the episode count, with six episodes being released all at once. Hopefully, the show can continue the high quality of previous seasons with this increased episode order. Season three of “Black Mirror” will be released Oct. 21.
“American Horror Story” (FX)
Despite “American Horror Story: Hotel” being another disappointment in the franchise, there is high anticipation for the sixth season. Executive Producer Ryan Murphy has withheld all details — including the theme for the next installment. The advertising campaign is genuinely creepy, but every season of “AHS” begins with a bang. The bigger question is whether this season will actually finish strong. Season six premieres Sept. 14 on FX.
“Transparent” (Amazon)
There was no sophomore slump for the second season of “Transparent,” and the show returns this fall for what should be another hit season. Jeffrey Tambor continues to deliver one of the most important and momentous performances on television as Maura Pfefferman. Do not be surprised if “Transparent” sweeps the Emmys later this month. Season three of “Transparent” returns Sept. 23 on Amazon Prime.
“Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” (Netflix)
After being off-air for nine years, the CW series has been renewed by Netflix for an eighth season of four 90-minute episodes. Lauren Graham hasn’t aged a year, and Melissa McCarthy is now a movie superstar. With nearly the entire rest of the cast returning for this revival of the indie hit, “Gilmore Girls” is sure to make an impact. “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” will be released Nov. 25 on Netflix.
“Westworld” (HBO)
This upcoming new high-concept science-fiction series is based on the 1973 film of the same name. After being stuck in development hell, the show is finally making its way to air. The show is set around a futuristic immersive theme park and deals with the artificial consciousness of the robots that work in the park. “Westworld” premieres Oct. 2 on HBO.
“Atlanta” (FX)
Donald Glover (also known as Childish Gambino) returns to TV in “Atlanta.” The show is about the rap scene in Atlanta and two cousins who are navigating this world, trying to bring their family out of poverty. If “Atlanta” is anything like Glover’s previous projects, expect it to be wildly original. “Atlanta” premieres Sept. 6 on FX.
“Luke Cage” (Netflix)
“Luke Cage” is the next Marvel Netflix series leading up to “The Defenders.” After an incredible first season of “Jessica Jones” and a somewhat disappointing second season season of “Daredevil,” hopefully “Luke Cage” can find a new path. With a primarily black cast, “Luke Cage” has the additional pressure to be marketable and critically acclaimed. The first season of “Luke Cage” will be released Sept. 30 on Netflix.
“Divorce” (HBO)
Sarah Jessica Parker returns to the small screen, reuniting with HBO 12 years after the end of “Sex and the City.” “Divorce” follows Parker as a woman whose marriage has gone downhill. Molly Shannon is also in the cast, which could be the next big comedy for HBO. “Divorce” premieres Oct. 9.
