A tough season for the Virginia volleyball team ended this weekend, as the team lost its final two matches against Virginia Tech Friday and Pittsburgh Saturday.
The Cavaliers (7-25, 4-16 ACC) gave the Hokies (13-18, 8-12 ACC) a tough test, but Virginia was edged in a 15 tiebreak set. After the Hokies narrowly took the first two sets, the Cavaliers awoke and won the next two decisively to force the tiebreak. After going back and forth during the final set, Virginia Tech pulled away just enough to win, 15-13.
Despite the loss, senior outside hitter Haley Kole had a career day in her second-to-last game, leading the team with a career-high 29 kills.
Virginia ended its season with a loss against Pittsburgh (24-8, 15-5 ACC) Saturday, 3-1. The teams were tied after the second set, but the Panthers squad used its depth to pull away and win the final two sets decisively. Kole once again led the Cavaliers in kills with 13.
Coming into the season with such a young team, Virginia coach Dennis Hohenshelt expected growing pains as he tried to develop six new freshmen with three seniors graduating — outside hitters Kole and Jasmine Burton and defensive specialist Lexi Riccolo. Despite their struggles from inexperience, the Cavaliers hung tight all season and played toe-to-toe with top teams in the ACC amidst their losses.
