After a long and successful season, the No. 14 Virginia men’s swimming and diving team began their hardest test of the season Monday, as they entered the ACC Championships.
The Cavaliers (5-2, 4-1 ACC) have posted strong wins against Penn State, Pitt, Virginia Tech, Duke and UNC this season, in addition to qualifying a high number of swimmers for the NCAA championships in March. The ACC season title meet presents a good opportunity to make even more qualifying times.
After a strong second-place finish by the Virginia women’s team in their ACC Championship meet, the men hope to follow up with another strong performance to round out the season before Nationals.
Only No. 3 NC State boasts a higher ranking than Virginia’s. No. 19 Notre Dame and No. 21 Florida State round out the top 25, while Duke and Virginia Tech both received votes but were not selected as one of the top teams in the country.
Virginia should carry this advantage — as well as a wealth of ACC success — into the championship meet. With strong swimmers such as sophomore Zach Fong, senior Austin Quinn and senior Matt Lockman, the Cavaliers should feel more than confident heading into the meet.
The ACC Championship continues Tuesday through Thursday at the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center in Atlanta, Ga.
