The Virginia men’s golf team wrapped up its regular season earlier today with a sixth-place finish at the Gary Koch Invitational in Gastonia, N.C. The Cavaliers shot a combined three-round score of 869 (5-over).
Virginia played the first two rounds of the tournament on Monday, and ended the day in fifth place after shooting a 290 (2-over) in round one and a 294 (6-over) in round two. The team then shot a 285 (3-under) today in the final round to finish in sixth place out of 14 teams.
The Cavaliers’ top performer for the tournament was sophomore Thomas Walsh. Walsh shot a combined score of 216 (even) to finish tied 19th individually out of 81 golfers. This is the second time this year that Walsh has finished a tournament with Virginia’s lowest score, as the sophomore also achieved this result in the Bank of Tennessee tournament last October.
Senior captains Derek Bard and Jimmy Stanger each shot scores of 217 (1-over) to finish tied for No. 23. Rounding it out for the Cavaliers were freshman Andrew Orischak, who shot a 222 (6-over) to finish tied for No. 39, and junior Danny Walker, who shot a 226 (10-over) to finish at No. 54.
Freshman Luke Schapp also competed as an individual in the tournament. Schapp shot a 222 (6-over) to finish tied for No. 39.
Virginia will next compete in the ACC Championships from April 21 to 23. The Cavaliers — who are the No. 2 team in the ACC behind Wake Forest according to the latest NCAA rankings on golfstat.com — will be a major contender to win their first conference championship in program history.
