The Virginia women’s golf team finished in eighth place out of 15 teams at the Mason Rudolph Championship this past weekend. Virginia shot a combined three-round score of 861 — three under par.
While the team’s overall finish was average, the Cavaliers were led by some excellent individual performances in the season-opening tournament. Virginia’s top player on the weekend was junior Anna Redding, who shot a 210 — 6 under par — to finish tied for eighth overall out of 81 golfers. It was Redding’s third career top-10 finish at an NCAA tournament. Redding’s strong weekend was highlighted by her play in the final round. The Concord, N.C. native shot a 67 — 5 under par — in the third round, which was the best round score of her career.
Another strong performance for Virginia came from freshman Beth Lillie. Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Lillie finished second on the Cavaliers and 30th overall with a score of 214 — 2 under par. A top recruit for the Cavaliers this past year, Lillie showed her talent in this tournament that will likely make her a major contributor to both Virginia’s short-term and long-term success.
The Cavaliers will have some time off before they next play in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational starting Oct. 13. Virginia will look to build upon its performance at the Mason Rudolph Championship, and compete in what will be another premier tournament.
