The Virginia men’s golf team placed 5th in the Linger Longer Invitational, a three-day tournament that ran from Sunday to Tuesday on the Great Waters Course in Greensboro, Ga. No. 8 Alabama took home the team title for the tournament, followed in order, by Georgia, Penn State and Ohio State.
The Cavaliers had three golfers place in the top 25 best individual performances for the tournament, highlighted by a sixth-place finish from junior Thomas Walsh. Walsh was 5-under over the course of the whole tournament, with his best performance being a 3-under 69 on Monday. Walsh ultimately finished 9 strokes off the leader, Alabama senior Lee Hodges, who shot 14-under for the tournament. The other Cavaliers with strong individual showings were senior Danny Walker and sophomore Andrew Orischak, with 13th and 25th place finishes, respectively. Walker was 2-under for the tournament while Orischak was 2-over. Par was 72 for 18 holes, and 216 for the tournament.
As a team Virginia finished 25 strokes behind eventual champion Alabama. Sunday was the strongest showing for the team as a whole when they shot 286 as a team, with the worst day being Tuesday with a 292 performance. The top four performances are what get factored into the team scoring for the tournament, so the team par any given day was 288. Sophomore Ashton Poole had the fourth-best performance for the Cavaliers shooting a 225, good for 53rd place of the individual performers.
The Linger Longer Invitational wrapped up a busy two week stretch for the men’s golf team. In the last two weeks, the team has also won the Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken S.C. March 6th and placed 3rd in the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. March 11th. The team now has three weeks off until they return to action April 9 at the Gary Koch Invitational in Gastonia, N.C.
