I am a fourth-year at the University, and my work as a fellow for Leslie Cockburn these past three months has been the most meaningful period of my entire college career. I chose to work for Leslie over the other three Democratic candidates primarily because of her progressive policy stances, most notably her commitment to strong environmental protections and meaningful criminal justice reform. But after learning more about Leslie from her committed and brilliant staff, as well as several face-to-face conversations with the candidate herself, I can promise that her forward-thinking ideas don’t begin to tell the full story of why she is the candidate to represent the Democratic Party this November.
Leslie’s record speaks for itself. She is an award-winning journalist who has travelled across a half dozen war zones, going where other journalists feared to go. Whether it be as a reporter on the ground in the jungles of Central America or a producer of PBS Frontline and 60 Minutes, Leslie is determined to hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions. She is both fearless and tireless, and will never stop fighting for the people of Virginia.
Leslie’s impressive credentials and commitment to progressive ideals has led to massive grassroots support throughout the district. The Fifth District is running a caucus-convention to select a Democratic nominee, rather than a traditional primary. This requires that dedicated supporters file as delegates on their candidate’s behalf. Despite there being just 250 delegate spots, around 350 individuals have filed to represent Leslie, outpacing any of the other candidates. The foundations her campaign has put down over the past few months through involvement with local communities will provide the edge needed to win the general election this November.
Leslie Cockburn is the only candidate who is progressive, viable and truly exceptional. She has the capacity, drive and support necessary to win the Fifth District and represent its interests in Congress. If you want to join Leslie’s movement and help give Virginia’s Fifth a representative it can be proud of, please come out and caucus for her this week.
