In a meeting of the full Board of Visitors Wednesday afternoon in the Rotunda, Board members approved three new degree programs in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The meeting took place during a condensed session of the Board of Visitors — initially intended to be a three-day collection of committee meetings — due to the uncertainty surrounding Hurricane Florence

The new programs will be a bachelor of arts in statistics, a bachelor of science in statistics and a doctor of philosophy in media, culture and technology. The new degrees in statistics formalize already-existing interdisciplinary statistics programs in the College, while the media, culture and technology doctorate is an entirely new program.

University Executive Vice President and Provost Thomas Katsouleas said the new doctorate program “would be one of four in the country,” describing it as the 21st-century equivalent of a journalism doctorate degree.

While approved by the full Board, the new degree programs remain subject to approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
