The Virginia women’s basketball team won 55-41 against Coppin State at home Sunday afternoon.
Junior guard Dominique Toussaint led Virginia (3-5) in scoring with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half. However, Toussaint was 0-5 from three-point range and turned the ball over six times.
Coppin State (0-6) junior forward Chance Graham led all scorers with 21 points, the only Coppin State player in double figures. Graham only shot 5-23 on field goals, but all five that she made were three-pointers.
Virginia led 28-16 at the half after ending the second quarter on a 7-0 run. The Cavaliers then extended their lead to 45-29 at the end of the third. However, Coppin State narrowed their deficit to 10 points with 2:33 to play before Virginia sophomore guard Khyasia Caldwell put the game away with a layup. Virginia went 5:17 without scoring in the 4th quarter before Caldwell’s layup.
Caldwell scored a career-high 11 points, shooting 5-5 from the field. Caldwell also grabbed a career-high five rebounds.
Six-foot-nine junior center Felicia Aiyeotan missed her fourth consecutive game with an injury. Despite not having Aiyeotan, the Cavaliers outrebounded the Eagles 50-41 and blocked a season-high 10 shots. Junior forward Lisa Jablonowski started her third straight game in place of Aiyeotan.
Junior small forward Jocelyn Willoughby had a career-high 14 rebounds, also adding nine points for Virginia.
The Cavaliers will host American Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Virginia will also play at home against Radford Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. before an 11-day break for final exams.
