Junior guard Kyle Guy was named as one of the 10 candidates for the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award on Tuesday Feb. 5.
The award recognizes guards with elite shooting abilities, as determined by a national committee made up of top college basketball personnel. Past winners include players like Purdue’s Carsen Edwards, Kentucky’s Malik Monk and Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield.
Guy finds his name on the list after being one of No. 3 Virginia’s top scorers this season. He is averaging 14.5 points per game — which makes him the second highest scorer on the team — and he is the team’s leading three-point shooter with a 43.8 percent success rate from behind the arc and 60 three-pointers.
Guy has regularly put up double figures for Virginia and boasts a 15-game double figure scoring streak. Additionally, he set a program record with 11 consecutive threes made over a two-game period, while also recording his 1,000th career point against Wake Forest earlier in the season.
Guy has been a contributor throughout his time at Virginia, playing in every game of his freshman season, earning honors — such as being named a Third-Team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and Associated Press for the 2017-18 season — and being the 2018 ACC Tournament MVP, as well as a selection for the 2018 All-ACC First Team.
The other candidates for the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award include Cincinnati’s Jarron Cumberland, Duke’s RJ Barrett, Hofstra’s Justin Wright-Foreman, Mississippi State’s Quinndary Weatherspoon, Syracuse’s Tyus Battle, Texas Tech’s Jarrett Culver, Villanova’s Phil Booth, Virginia Tech’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Washington’s Jaylen Nowell.
In March, five finalists will be presented to West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2019 Jerry West Award will then be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles April 12.
