Fresh off its first ACC victory last week, the No. 22 Virginia wrestling team was unable to notch two wins in a row, losing to No.14 Virginia Tech Saturday at the Moss Arts Center. The Cavaliers (12-9, 1-3 ACC) could only win two weight classes as the Hokies (9-4, 3-1 ACC) posted a dominant 30-6 victory.
While Virginia’s usual standouts — junior Jack Mueller and redshirt sophomore Jay Aiello — picked up important wins, the Cavaliers couldn’t keep up with the Hokies in the overall score.
Virginia Tech was on the board first with freshman Mitch Moore’s tech fall at 141 pounds over redshirt junior Sam Krivus. Moore’s win was the first of six-consecutive Hokie victories to start off the dual.
With the Hokies at a commanding 24-0 overall lead, the Cavaliers finally got on the board with Aiello — the 10th-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds — securing a 14-7 decision. After Virginia Tech’s redshirt senior Billy Miller picked up a win at heavyweight, the still-undefeated Mueller gave Virginia its second win of the day at 125 pounds.
After Virginia’s 37-5 loss to Virginia Tech back in January at the Virginia Duals, the Cavaliers hoped to produce a different result this time around. Despite getting points from Aiello in addition to Mueller Saturday, the Hokies were too strong to overcome in a nationally-ranked showdown.
“All the credit to Virginia Tech tonight,” Coach Steve Garland said. “They out-wrestled us in just about every position.”
Virginia will return to Memorial Gymnasium Friday to face No. 15 Pittsburgh on Senior Night.
