The No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team lost to No. 4 Syracuse 16-11 Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse (6-1, 1-1 ACC) scored two goals within the first four minutes to take an early lead. Virginia (5-1, 0-1 ACC) answered to cut the deficit to one, and the two teams proceeded to trade goals for much of the first half.
After senior attacker Avery Shoemaker scored with 8:48 remaining in the first half to make the score 5-4, Syracuse went on a 5-1 run to head into halftime with a 10-5 lead.
The Orange added two early second-half goals to extend their lead to seven. The Cavaliers attempted to rally, scoring six of the next eight goals to make it a 14-11 game with 4:29 remaining.
However, the Orange were able to add two more goals in the game’s final five minutes to seal the victory.
Junior midfielder Sammy Mueller led the Cavaliers in scoring with a hat trick. Shoemaker, senior midfielder Maggie Jackson, sophomore midfielder Ashlyn McGovern and junior midfielder Nora Bowen all scored two goals each in the loss. Jackson led the team in points while Syracuse junior attacker Emily Hawryschuk led all players with four goals.
This was the Cavaliers’ first loss of 2019 after starting the season with five consecutive wins. Virginia returns home to Klöckner Stadium to take on George Mason Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers then resume ACC action with a trip to Chapel Hill next Saturday to take on North Carolina.
