Virginia softball lost to Radford Tuesday night despite coming up with more hits than the Highlanders.
Senior pitcher Allyson Frei started on the mound for the Cavaliers (16-14, 5-4 ACC) and gave up three quick runs in the first to give the Highlanders (12-18, 3-3 Big South) an early lead. After two straight walks, Radford freshman right fielder Destiny Freeman hit a home run over the right field fence to make it a 3-0 game.
Radford struck again in the second. Freshman designated player Lindsay Hunter produced a second home run for the Highlanders, a solo shot to left field. In the following inning, freshman pitcher Clare Zureich came in to relieve Frei. Zureich allowed one run to score but left two runners stranded to end the inning.
Attempting to mount a comeback, Virginia scored its first pair of runs in the fourth. Senior right fielder Erika Osherow led the drive with a single followed by a walk by senior catcher Olivia Gott. Freshman shortstop Arizona Ritchie singled to shortstop, and Osherow crossed home on a fielding error. Sophomore pinch runner Savana Avilla scored another run on a fielding error by Radford third baseman Sienna Williams.
Sophomore infielder Hayley Busby homered in the fifth to add another run for Virginia. Busby’s home run was her sixth for the season.
Two doubles in the sixth put Virginia one run shy of tying things up. Ritchie doubled to right field and a double by freshman outfielder Tori Gilbert made it a 5-4 game. With one out and a runner in scoring position, the Cavaliers came up empty for the rest of the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Radford’s Hunter Mundy hit a third home run for the Highlanders, adding an insurance run going into the final inning.
