Virginia Coach Tony Bennett was named ACC Coach of the Year Monday. It was his second consecutive year winning the award and the fourth time in six years. Besides the 2017-18 season, he also won the award during the 2013-14 season and the 2014-15 season.
Bennett won the honor by a wide margin, beating out second place Virginia Tech Coach Buzz Williams by 18 votes. Only two coaches in ACC history have more ACC Coach of the Year accolades than Bennett now — Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski has five and former North Carolina Coach Dean Smith has eight.
Over the last six years, Bennett has led Virginia to an impressive 89-19 record in ACC play, a 0.824 winning percentage. Virginia was the ACC regular season champion in each of the four years Bennett won the accolade and also won the ACC Tournament in two of those years.
Bennett’s packline defense, highly efficient offense and coaching principles have made Virginia a consistent national contender.
This year, Bennett has led the Cavaliers to another regular season title. Virginia finished 16-2 in ACC play and shared the regular season title with North Carolina.
Next up for Virginia is the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The No. 1 seed Cavaliers won a double bye with their stellar regular season play and will face the winner of N.C. State against Clemson Thursday.
