The Virginia softball team (16-22, 5-10 ACC) lost 11-6 on the road at Longwood (25-13, 11-1 Big South) Tuesday.
Freshman pitcher Aly Rayle took the loss for Virginia, pitching the first two innings and allowing six runs on five hits.
Longwood led off the first with a double, taking advantage of a throwing error and following it up with a single to take an early three-run lead. The Lancers added to their lead in the second as a three-run home run by senior center fielder Jordan Clark put them ahead 6-0.
Virginia broke a dry spell of 27 consecutive scoreless innings when they scored five in the top of the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Hayley Busby got things going with a single, and senior Lacy Smith followed with an RBI double to left center.
Freshmen left fielder Tori Gilbert, second baseman Abigail Barber and catcher Donna Friedman each added hits to score a combined five runs for the inning.
However, the Lancers scored again in the fifth off of two two-out singles and scored four more in the bottom of the sixth with three hits. Virginia added another run in the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome Longwood as the Cavaliers fell 11-6.
Longwood senior pitcher Sydney Gay earned the win on the mound, throwing two and two-thirds innings in relief for the Lancers.
The Cavaliers will travel to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend to face Virginia Tech in a three-game series. The games will start today at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
