Junior college guard Tomas Woldetensae committed to play for Coach Tony Bennett at Virginia Wednesday.

Junior college guard Tomas Woldetensae committed to play for the Virginia men’s basketball team last Wednesday after an official visit over the weekend.

Woldetensae, a first team junior college All-American at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, will be eligible to play in 2019-2020. He is the first junior college player Coach Tony Bennett has ever recruited to play at Virginia.

At Indian Hills this past season, Woldetensae averaged 17.3 points per game in 14.1 minutes per game. The 6-foot-5 Italian native also shot 47.6 percent from three-point range.

With the addition of Woldetensae, the Cavaliers helped solve some of their depth issues in the backcourt caused by the early departures of junior guards Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy for the NBA Draft. Sophomore guard Kihei Clark and incoming freshman guard Casey Morsell appear to also be in line for meaningful minutes this season.

The Cavaliers still have two remaining scholarship spots to fill. Virginia is still in the hunt for former Marquette forwards Sam and Joey Hauser.
