Wings Over — a chain restaurant that is known for its chicken wings — has served the University community for nine years.

After nine years of serving the Charlottesville community, Wings Over Charlottesville closed April 28. Wings Over, located on Ivy Road, is located on land owned by the UVA Foundation.

The University is in the midst of redeveloping the Emmet Street/Ivy Road Corridor, which includes the building that formerly housed Wings Over.

According to University spokesperson Anthony de Bruyn, Wings Over initiated the closure.

“The tenant initiated discussions with the UVA Foundation to terminate its lease early,” de Bruyn said in an email statement to The Cavalier Daily.  The UVA Foundation purchased the land in April 2010 for just over $1.7 million, according to Charlottesville’s Geographic Information System.

In March, the Board of Visitors approved guidelines for a hotel and conference center on a 14.5 acre parcel of land that includes the former location of Wings Over Charlottesville.

Wings Over — a chain restaurant that is known for its chicken wings — operates numerous locations east of the Mississippi. Wings Over Charlottesville was Virginia’s only location.

In an email statement to The Cavalier Daily, Wings Over said that while it was true that Wings Over Charlottesville was closing, it is not necessarily a permanent closure.

“We are actively looking at new opportunities and locations that will allow us to be more accessible to the Charlottesville community,” Wings Over said in an email statement to The Cavalier Daily.

Alex Cintron, a fourth-year College student and former Student Council president, expressed his disappointment about the closure of Wings Over. Cintron, who runs Wings for Wahoos — a Facebook account that evaluates wings in the Charlottesville area — had nothing but praise for Wings Over.

“Wings Over was always one of those restaurants that no matter what did not fail me,” Cintron said. “Wonderfully cooked, wonderful staff, always quick, their sauces and variations were good, good prices, good delivery services, just overall an amazing establishment.”

Wings Over had its own praise for the Charlottesville community.

“We thank the community for its tremendous support and generosity,” Wings Over said. “We can’t wait to share the best wings with everyone very soon.”

According to de Bruyn, the University has no immediate plans for the building formerly occupied by Wings Over.
