In the third home game of the season, the Virginia men’s soccer team defeated Radford (1-3-2, 0-0 Big South), 1-0. The Cavaliers (5-0, 1-0 ACC) scored in the fifth minute of the match and secured the victory with a shutout by junior goalkeeper Colin Shutler.
Entering the contest, Virginia was undefeated, impressively beating the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country — Maryland and Duke. This Cavaliers team is only the tenth to start 5-0, and the first team since 2006.
Virginia continued its high level of performance Tuesday night and delivered a clean sheet and decisive victory.
Virginia scored in the match’s first five minutes. The ball was deflected by a Radford defender off of a cross by senior midfielder Robin Afamefuna, landing directly in front of sophomore forward Daniel Steedman for a one-touch finish. Although it was early in the match, Steedman’s goal was the game-winner, his second in the last three games.
Throughout the contest, the Cavaliers came close to scoring but could not capitalize on multiple set pieces. While the game was fairly even in terms of shots and shots on goal, Virginia controlled the pace of the game and won the possession — 58 percent to 42 percent.
Shutler had the performance of the night, holding Radford scoreless through 90 minutes despite its nine shots. His fourth shutout in five games, Shutler made four saves on the night. He is proving to be one of the best goalkeepers in the country. Virginia has the lowest goal against average in the ACC and fourth-lowest in the nation.
Men’s soccer returns to action at Klöckner Stadium against N.C. State in a return to conference play Friday night at 7 p.m.
