As a 2016 School of Engineering and Applied Sciences graduate, former Dominion Energy intern and current Dominion Energy employee, I respectfully disagree with the recent article disparaging Dominion as a place of employment for U.Va. graduates — especially engineering graduates.
When I reflect on my four years of study at the University, I remember late nights in Thornton and Rice Hall, illuminated by the glow of my laptop screen. I was, and still am, working towards becoming an innovative leader charged with leaving society a better place than when I found it, and Dominion Energy is the best place for me to do just that.
At Dominion, great work experience does equate to net positive impacts on the community. Working with compliance groups on the natural gas team, I can speak firsthand to Dominion’s mindful efforts to not only meet environmental and commercial requirements, but also to far surpass them — a trait that is common to all facets of Dominion.
From building the largest offshore wind project in the country to developing solar projects to help my alma mater accomplish its goal of reaching net-zero emissions, I couldn’t be more proud to work for a company leading the charge on alternative energy solutions.
My coworkers are even developing initiatives such as harnessing methane from pig farms to provide customers with renewable natural gas.
Dominion is enacting real and meaningful change to the energy industry and the communities it serves and is always working to do better. It is a company continuing to improve sustainability across its footprint and I urge the author and other like-minded students to reevaluate their views.
I am hopeful for the future of energy, and I am excited to be a part of that future with Dominion.
