Virginia men’s and women’s cross country places 18th and 29th in first national meets

Senior AJ Ernst and junior Hannah Moran paced the Cavaliers

The Virginia men placed 18th overall out of 36 teams as senior AJ Ernst recorded a career-high time of 24:15.7 in the 8k to finish 47th overall.

The No. 16 Virginia men’s cross country team traveled to Madison for the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Friday and finished with a score of 492 points to place 18th overall out of the 36 teams at the meet. No. 1 Northern Arizona took first place with 59 points followed by No. 5 Stanford with 133 points and No. 28 Tulsa with 175 points.

The Cavalier men were led by senior AJ Ernst, who recorded a career-high time of 24:15.7 in the 8k to finish 47th overall. He was followed by sophomore Peter Morris, who finished 87th with a time of 24:30.3, senior Alex Corbett, who finished 101st with a time of 24:37.3 and junior Rohann Asfaw, who finished 117th with a time of 24:43.3. Senior Ari Klau placed 152nd with a time of 24:57.8, rounding out Virginia’s scoring runners. 

"This is a tough group of men, so we will focus our attention on the championship season," said Vin Lananna, director of track & field and cross country. “ACCs are in two weeks, and we have our work cut out for us.”

Three Virginia runners also competed outside of the Championship Race in the "B" Race. Senior Matthew Novak placed 22nd with a time of 24:57.6, followed by junior Harry Monroe at 37th and senior Randy Neish at 42nd recording times of 25:16.2 and 25:19.9, respectively.

The Virginia women also went on the road to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational. The Cavaliers placed 29th out of 37 teams with 711 points.

Washington, BYU and Colorado took the top three spots with 84, 87 and 126 points, respectively.

Virginia was led by junior Hannah Moran, who finished the 6k with a time of 21:06.0 to place 67th overall. She was followed by junior Kiera Bothwell at 105th with a time of 21:31.3, junior Olivia Sargent at 139th with a time of 21:48.8, freshman Natalie Bardach at 200th with a time of 22:21.9 and junior Madelin Rennyson at 205th with a time of 22:25.6. 

"Hannah Moran did a great job today," Lananna said. “Going forward, the goal for ACCs is to continue progressing and to get everyone healthy and back in our lineup."

Virginia races next in Blacksburg Nov. 1 in the ACC Championships.
