No. 14 Cornell was no match for No. 8 men's squash, as the Cavaliers swept the No. 1-No. 4 positions.

Virginia squash had a strong week of victories, defeating two top ranked opponents in Brown and Cornell, while continuing its undefeated streak at home.

Brown

The No. 8 men’s team (10-3) fought for a close 5-4 victory against No. 16 Brown (3-4, 0-3 Ivy), whereas the No. 10 women’s team (8-3) secured a comfortable 8-1 victory against the No. 12 Bears (2-4, 0-3 Ivy).

On the women’s end, freshman Maria Paula Moya seized a swift 3-1 win in position four to gain the first point of the night for the Cavaliers.

Freshmen Julia Curran and Grace Seymour followed with hardfought 3-2 victories in positions six and seven, respectively, to extend the Virginia lead. Sophomore Emma Jinks also won in position one, making the score 4-0.

Ultimately, senior Sarah Doss clinched the match point to give the Cavaliers a victory.

On the men’s side, the teams got out to a close start, with Brown taking an early 1-3 lead. However, shutout 3-0 wins by freshman Teddy Durfee in position nine and freshman Omar El Torkey in position two tied the game.

After another Brown win, senior Toby Hansford tied the game again with his win in position eight, and ultimately, sophomore Will Holey remained calm in position three to win 3-1 and secure a Cavalier victory.

The women’s team now stands with a 2-1 record against the Bears, after last defeating them 6-3 in the 2019 College Squash Association National Championships. The men’s team had not faced Brown since the 2017-18 season, when it upset the Bears 5-4.

Cornell

The men’s team stretched an early lead against the No. 14 Big Red (3-6, 1-2 Ivy) with Holey and freshman Cullen Little seizing two early wins to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Cavaliers.

Cornell had wins in position five and position seven to keep them in the game, but El Torkey ultimately clinched a win in position two to take the match point and ensure a victory for the Cavaliers.

The women’s team battled for a close 5-4 upset victory against No. 9 Cornell (3-4), coming out strong after Moya gained a 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5 victory. Virginia found itself with a 2-1 lead after Maxwell won in position three.

A notable performance came from Seymour, who found herself in position eight for the final match of the day, with the competition tied 4-4. She ultimately achieved a 3-0 victory, recording match scores of 11-4, 11-9, 11-4.

Dickinson

The men’s squash team seized a 8-1 win against Dickinson (4-9) Sunday at the Kline Squash Center.

A notable performance came from redshirt freshman Peter Miller, who battled back from a 7-11 loss in the first game to win in position six 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.

The women’s team swept No. 20 Dickinson (4-7) at the Kline Squash Center, capping a three game win streak this week.

Sophomore Caroline Baldwin ceded only three points in the first win for the Cavaliers in position seven, winning 11-1, 11-0, 11-2. Moya also capped a dominant week with a 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 win in position three.
