The University announced today that alumnus Stephen Farmer, who earned his master’s degree in English from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, has been named the first vice provost for enrollment and will begin his appointment Jan. 1.
As the inaugural vice provost for enrollment at the University, Farmer will unite the offices of Undergraduate Admission, the University Registrar and Student Financial Services while reporting directly to the provost.
Farmer is expected to develop strategies to attract applicants, recruit admitted students and support their financial and enrollment needs as University students. His role aims to provide a cohesive enrollment experience for students and anticipate the shifts in the higher education landscape and student needs.
“Enrollment and admissions at an institution like ours are complicated, but Steve has such a wealth of experience and a talent for relationship-building that he’s a perfect fit for this new leadership role,” University President Jim Ryan said in a press release. “I’m excited to work with him and the offices he’ll lead as they further shape and support our amazing and diverse student body.”
Currently, Farmer is the vice provost for enrollment and undergraduate admissions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before joining UNC, Farmer graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in English and obtained his master’s degree in English from the University. He also served as the University’s senior assistant dean of admission.
“I am deeply grateful for the chance to serve and lead at U.Va.,” Farmer said in the same press release. “Working together and with others across Grounds, our teams in enrollment will advance the mission of the University by strengthening the student body, improving the student experience and serving students, families and communities across the Commonwealth and beyond.”
