In the most recent installment of Virginia baseball’s midweek matchups, the team faced Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. The Cavaliers (9-11, 3-9 ACC) were unable to overcome a deficit that began in the first inning and ultimately lost to the Flames (14-5, 3-0 ASUN) by eight.
This first inning debt was thanks to an impressive showing by Liberty who scored five runs — one of which was a three-run homer — and sent 10 batters to the plate. The Flames only added to their lead with another run in the third inning — all the while the Cavaliers were coming up dry.
Virginia scored both of its runs during the fourth inning — with four Cavaliers combining on the effort. First, freshman catcher Kyle Teel and junior infielder Zack Gelof reached base after two solid hits. Then, Liberty threw a wild pitch which brought Teel and Gelof into prime scoring position. Finally, sacrifice flies from senior outfielder Brendan Rivoli and senior infielder Devin Ortiz brought in Teel and Gelof — putting the Cavaliers on the board for the first and last time of the game.
Teel has had an impressive freshman season thus far. In just this game, he accounted for two of the four Virginia hits throughout the game. He has also had multiple hits in four of the last five games.
The Flames went on to score one run in the fourth inning, two in the seventh and another in the eighth. This ended Virginia’s previous streak of 20 midweek wins.
The grind continued for the Cavaliers with a return to Charlottesville for a three-game series against Miami. First pitch was Friday at 4 p.m. and all three games were broadcasted on ACCNX.
