Morsell averaged 14.8 minutes of playing time per game this season, down from 21.8 in the 2019-20 season.

The first major announcement regarding the men’s basketball team following the conclusion of Virginia’s season against Ohio in the NCAA tournament came on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore guard Casey Morsell announced that he will be officially entering the NCAA transfer portal and will be looking to join a new college program.

“Today, I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal,” Morsell said via his Twitter account. “I would like to thank the UVA family for a great experience and opportunity to grow.”

Hailing from Fort Washington, Md., Morsell was a standout player at St. John’s College High School, where he averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and three assists per game in the 2018-19 season. Additional accolades for Morsell prior to joining Virginia included being named 2019 Gatorade Player of the Year and being a finalist for the USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team.

Morsell was also recruited by a number of respected programs before becoming a Cavalier — including Maryland, Virginia Tech, Penn State and Florida.

During the 2019-20 season – which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic — Morsell started 13 out of 30 games and averaged four points and 1.7 rebounds. This past season allowed Morsell to demonstrate improvements to his game including an increased confidence shooting the basketball as well as his strong defensive capabilities.

Perhaps one of Morsell’s most impressive performances came on Jan. 13 against Notre Dame. In the 80-68 Virginia win, Morsell made six of his seven field goal attempts, including a perfect three-of-three from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points and four rebounds.

However, with statistics similar to that of his first year — 4.4 points and 1.3 rebounds per game — and averaging just 14.8 minutes per game, Morsell decided that it would be best to explore other opportunities. He joins fellow ACC players freshman forward and center Walker Kessler of North Carolina and sophomore guard Jalen Cone of Virginia Tech in entering the portal.
