The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Boston College by a score of 20-11 Saturday afternoon at Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field in Newton, Mass. It was the first loss of the year for the Cavaliers (5-1, 2-1 ACC), who won five consecutive games to open the season.
Senior attacker Charlotte North opened the scoring for the Eagles (4-1, 1-1 ACC) a little over three minutes into the game. North added another goal five minutes later, and junior attacker Jenn Medjid followed that up with a goal to give Boston College a 3-0 lead with 18:52 remaining in the first half.
Freshman midfielder Maggie Bostain broke the scoring drought for the Cavaliers less than a minute later. However, Boston College responded with a 3-1 run to take a 6-2 lead with a little over 10 minutes left in the half.
Virginia cut into Boston College’s lead with three goals in a two-minute span. Junior attacker Lillie Kloak scored two goals, and junior attacker Ashlyn McGovern added one to reduce the deficit to 6-5.
North scored two quick goals to regain some of the lead, but freshman attacker Morgan Schwab scored for the Cavaliers to make it an 8-6 game with five minutes left in the half. The Eagles had a strong end to the first half and scored three goals to head into halftime with an 11-6 lead.
Boston College picked up where it left off to open the second half, scoring five of the first six goals to extend its lead to 16-7. Virginia scored two of the next three goals, but Boston College responded with a 3-0 run to take a 20-9 lead with 6:40 remaining. Virginia scored two goals in the final five minutes to cut the margin to nine.
North was a major problem for the Cavaliers’ defense — as she scored seven goals and added two assists in the win. Kloak recorded a hat trick for Virginia, while Schwab added two goals.
Virginia returns to action Wednesday with a game against in-state foe VCU. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
