The Charlottesville Police Department responded to a burglary reported at the 1200 block of John Street at 4:57 a.m. Thursday, per a community alert sent by Timothy Longo, chief of the University Police Department and associate vice president for safety and security.

A female living in the residence reported seeing two subjects wearing ski masks inside the house. The suspects are believed to have entered through kicking the back door and fled upon being confronted by the resident. In addition to wearing ski masks, the suspects were described as around 6 foot 2 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds and wearing dark clothing.

CPD found three additional unoccupied residences on the scene that seemed to also have been broken into.

This is the first community alert during winter break but the third this month, following a robbery reported near Cohn’s store on the Corner Dec. 5 and a report of shots fired in the 800 block of Hardy Drive Dec. 11, where multiple shell casings were discovered. The fall semester saw a total of thirteen community alerts, including a prowling incident Sept. 29, an aggravated assault Sept. 25, and five shots fired reports.

“Community alerts” are shared with the University community when there is sufficient and timely information that can be released to the community without compromising any on-going investigations. “Timely warnings” are sent when a threat poses an “on-going threat” to the safety of the community.”

The announcement requests anyone with information regarding these incidents contact CPD at 434-970-3280.
