Founded by two cousins who opened their first store in Utah in 2017, Crumbl Cookies serves gourmet desserts and focuses on creating unique flavors inspired by popular foods and desserts. Each week, there are six different types of cookies sold. Two of those cookies, Pink Sugar and Milk Chocolate Chip, stay in the rotation every week, while the other four cookies change. Once a month, Crumbl Cookies swaps out the Pink Sugar Cookie with a Mystery Flavor that is unique to every location.

Since opening in 2017, Crumbl has now expanded to over 300 bakeries across the country. In June of 2022, Crumbl announced that it would open six new bakeries in Virginia, and the Charlottesville location opened in June.

Ever since a Crumbl Cookies location opened in my hometown of Richond, I have been hooked on their cookies. The minute you step into one of their bakeries, you get a whiff of sweet, buttery, delicious cookies. Crumbl’s cookies are soft and crumbly, the flavors are spot on and the cookies are huge — about 4 inches wide. Being the Crumbl Cookies fan that I am, I decided to stop by the Charlottesville bakery last week, located at 129 Community St., and review the different flavors. Last week’s rotation included Milk Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Cupcake, Dulce de Leche, Triple Berry Cobbler, S’mores and Pink Sugar.

Milk Chocolate Chip

Crumbl Cookies describes this cookie as “the classic — you can’t go wrong. Thick, soft and packed with milk chocolate chips.” Despite it being on the menu every week, this was my first time trying this cookie, and it has to be one of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had. It was crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. The cookie was baked to a warm golden brown, and the chocolate chips were sweet and gooey. If you’re looking to satisfy your cravings for grandma’s fresh baked cookies, this is the cookie for you.

Chocolate Cupcake

The first thing I noted about this cookie was that it stayed true to its name. The fudge frosting was the standout for me — it was rich without being too heavy or overly sweet.

This cookie also tasted like it was homemade. While it was very crumbly and not as moist as the others, the flavor of the cookie was excellent. It was a buttery, vanilla cookie, and it paired perfectly with the fudge frosting. I thought it was an excellent choice to use a vanilla cookie base, because the cookie was not too chocolatey.

Dulce de Leche

This cookie was probably my least favorite out of this week’s rotation. I will concede, though, that the cinnamon cookie base tasted exactly like a snickerdoodle, and the base was chewy, moist and thick and tasted amazing.

The dulce de leche frosting, however, was the part that I didn’t love. There was an intensely sweet, thick layer of this frosting on top of the cookie that overpowered the cinnamon base. In my opinion, the milky caramel flavors of the dulce de leche did not pair well with the cinnamon cookie. It was still a good cookie, but I was puzzled by the combination of flavors.

Triple Berry Cobbler

The oatmeal base of this cookie was perfect. It was moist and soft, but still crispy because of the oats. Unlike the Dulce de Leche cookie, I liked the flavor combination in this cookie. The cinnamon cream cheese frosting paired perfectly with the jammy berry topping. The frosting also complemented the hints of cinnamon in the oatmeal cookie. What I loved the most about this is that it tasted exactly like berry cobbler.

S’mores

The S’mores cookie was my favorite this week. It was crispy, crumbly and buttery. The graham cracker base was to die for. It had a hint of coconut in it, which complemented the rest of the cookie beautifully.

The cookie was still warm, so the marshmallow was gooey and stringy with each bite. The chocolate drizzle on top added a really nice touch, and I liked the contrast of textures and flavors in this cookie. The crispy cookie was warm with soft marshmallow and the gooey chocolate chips on the inside melted in my mouth.

Classic Pink Sugar

This cookie was also a first for me despite it being on the menu every week. I have heard mixed reviews about this cookie, and for the most part, you either love it or you hate it. Crumbl uses almond extract in the frosting of this cookie, which is a controversial cookie choice in my opinion. The flavor pairs really well with the rest of the cookie, so I enjoyed it anyway. The cookie base is a traditional sugar cookie baked to perfection, yet also chilled, so it almost tastes refreshing with each bite you take. I would only recommend this cookie to those with a huge sweet tooth because it is very sweet.
