The University has announced it has awarded posthumous degrees to Lavel Davis Jr., D'Sean Perry and Devin Chandler, the three students fatally shot the evening of Nov. 13.
“It was a great honor to be a part of presenting these diplomas to the families of Devin, Lavel and D’Sean,” Director of Athletics Carla Williams said in a statement.
Rachel Most, associate dean for undergraduate academic programs, made the request for all three students. Chandler was an American Studies major, Davis was an African American and African Studies major and Perry was a double major in Studio Art and African American and African Studies.
All three were members of the Virginia football team and were shot returning from a class field trip to Washington, D.C. The lives of Davis, Perry and Chandler were honored at a memorial service held in John Paul Jones Arena Nov. 19.
Two other individuals, third-year Mike Hollins and second-year student Marlee Morgan, were also injured. Both have since been discharged from U.Va. Health.
Suspect Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. is being held without bond at Albemarle County Regional Jail, where he awaits a status hearing scheduled for Thursday.
