A fire broke out at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house Thursday night, per an alert from the U.Va. Emergency Alert system sent at 10:06 p.m. No injuries have been reported. Photos and videos obtained by The Cavalier Daily showed the fire had caught in a room filled with what appeared to be packing peanuts.
A follow-up emergency alert declared the scene was stable at 10:43 p.m. Thursday. Fire and police personnel remained in the area and no further updates were sent.
Joseph Kratz, Interfraternity Council president and third-year College student, said the IFC is “happy and relieved” that everyone was evacuated safely and no one was injured. He said both Kappa Sigma and the IFC remain in communication with administration and safety officials as the situation continues to develop.
“Safety is a key pillar of the IFC, and we are appreciative that Kappa Sigma took the necessary and responsible steps to protect their members and guests,” Kratz said in an email statement to The Cavalier Daily. “This is an important learning opportunity, and, as a community, we will explore next steps we can take to prevent future incidents like the one the other evening.”
Luke Stone, Kappa Sigma fraternity president and third-year Commerce student, did not respond to a request for comment at time of publication.
