Virginia men’s basketball and Maryland announced Wednesday that they have agreed to a four-year series, which will see the longtime foes play annually from 2025 to 2029. The two teams have not squared off since 2018 but will be renewing a more than century-long rivalry when the Terrapins visit John Paul Jones Arena in 2025-26. The Cavaliers are set to host Maryland again during the 2027-28 season and will travel to College Park, Md. in both the 2026-27 and 2028-29 seasons.
“I greatly respect Coach [Kevin] Willard and what he’s doing there,” Coach Tony Bennett said. “We’ve played some exciting games against Maryland in the past, and we’re looking forward to a highly competitive series.”
Bennett has won eight of his 12 games against the Terrapins since joining Virginia in 2009, but the program still has a long way to go before it gets the ultimate upper hand — Maryland is 108-76 all-time against the Cavaliers. The series began in 1913 and picked up again in 1924, after which Virginia and the Terrapins played every year until 2014, save the 1939-40 season.
Maryland left the ACC for the Big Ten in 2014 and has since squared off with the Cavaliers only two times, both ending in Virginia victories.
