“University Museum Houses Variety of Exhibits”

The University Museum of Fine Arts, now known as The Fralin, opened in 1935 and has been a valuable part of our community ever since. In 1953, the museum displayed famous portraits of President Washington and our founder, Thomas Jefferson, as well as architecture and sculpture exhibits.

1960s

“Ellington Band Is Main Attraction At Openings Dance Tonight In Gym”

In 1961, Memorial Gymnasium hosted Duke Ellington and his band for the Openings Dance. Celebrated as one of the greatest, most timeless figures in music history, Ellington famously said, rather than separating into different genres, "There’s just music."

“P.U.M.P.K.I.N.’s To Make Yearly Roll”

Halloween marks the time when the mysterious P.U.M.P.K.I.N. Society delivers pumpkins to deserving students and faculty. Believed to be around 200 years old, with roots possibly dating back to the 14th century, this secret society uses cryptic messages and unique costume traditions to maintain their mystic allure. Past recipients often regard their pumpkin gifts as an honor.

“Students support the film industry”

The annual Virginia Festival of American Film, now known as the the Virginia Film Festival, was held for the first time in 1988 and concluded with a screening of “M*A*S*H”, celebrating director Robert Altman as the recipient of the Distinguished Filmmaker's Award. Although attendance was not as high as organizers had hoped, the staff knew it would take a few years for the event to catch on. Thirty-six years later, the VAFF is now one of the most popular cultural events in Charlottesville.

“The best of the bathrooms…and the worst”

Here is a review of the University’s wide range of bathrooms from 1998. The standards for the best bathrooms were cleanliness, ambiance, unique design and working locks and lights. Thankfully, most of the bathrooms around grounds met these standards with their own character and charm, but the bathrooms in Pavilion XI, the Student Activities building and Lambeth Commons unfortunately were not able to qualify.
