Coach Tony Bennett will announce his retirement Friday morning at a press conference, the program announced in a press release Thursday afternoon — a sudden and unforeseen lightning blast just a couple weeks before Bennett was primed to commence his 16th season at Virginia. His retirement is effective immediately.

The news came just a few months after the coach signed a contract extension that would keep him with the program until at least 2030. Bennett, the deliverer of a national title, the man who steered this program to unprecedented success, has been a beloved figure in Charlottesville.

Bennett will speak at a press conference Friday at 11 a.m.
