Today is Election Day! Check below for live updates on the presidential, U.S. Senate and Virginia’s 5th congressional district races, as well as voter turnout at University-area polling locations.
11:43 p.m. — Harris will win Virginia, the Associated Press projects. With 83 percent of the vote reported, she leads Trump by about four points.
11:32 p.m. — Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine will win re-election in Virginia for a third term in the U.S. Senate, the Associated Press projects. With 77 percent of the vote counted, Kaine is ahead by about five percentage points.
10:59 p.m. — Republican State Sen. John McGuire has won the election for Virginia’s 5th congressional district, according to the Associated Press. This is a hold for the Republicans. The margin for McGuire is 15 percentage points with 81 percent of the vote counted.
9:01 p.m. — 85 percent of the votes have now been counted in Charlottesville, and Harris has increased her margin to 69 points, closer to Biden’s 2020 number. Likewise, Kaine has increased his margin in Charlottesville to 68 points. Statewide, Trump leads by 1.1 percentage points, while Kaine leads by about two points with approximately half of the vote counted.
8:34 p.m. — 41 percent of the votes have been counted in the presidential race in Charlottesville, according to the Associated Press. Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Trump by 61 points, running under President Biden’s 73 point win in Charlottesville in 2020. Sen. Tim Kaine leads Republican Hung Cao by 60 points in Charlottesville. More votes to come, but the Democratic candidates are running under Biden’s 2020 result.
7:00 p.m. — Polls have now closed in Virginia, though voters still in line at polling stations will be permitted to vote. Results will be coming in shortly.
The polling location at the University’s Miller Center has received 316 votes, according to election officials. The location has also received 14 provisional ballots.
6:50 p.m. — The Slaughter Recreation Center polling location has received 1,009 votes with 10 minutes until polls close, according to election officials. 735 provisional ballots were cast by same-day registrants so far.
6:00 p.m. — Polls across Virginia are set to close in one hour. Voters in line at 7 p.m. will still be allowed to cast their ballots.
5:19 p.m. — The polling location at the University’s Miller Center has received 300 votes, according to election officials. The location has also received 13 provisional ballots.
5:07 p.m. — Updated turnout numbers from the City of Charlottesville are now available. Figures are as of 4 p.m., and the polling location at Johnson Elementary School has received 927 votes.
In Albemarle County, the University’s precinct at Slaughter Recreation Center has received 951 votes, according to election officials. The polling location has received approximately 500 provisional ballots cast by same-day registrants.
4:38 p.m. — The Venable polling location at Trailblazer Elementary School has received 889 votes and 531 provisional ballots, according to an election official. The official said that “almost all” of the provisional ballots were from same-day registration.
3:24 p.m. — The polling location at Johnson Elementary School has received a total of 889 votes and an additional 264 provisional ballots, according to election officials.
2:27 p.m. — The polling location at the University’s Miller Center has received 275 votes, according to election officials. The location has also received 12 provisional ballots, with five being from same day registration.
1:46 p.m. — The polling location at Slaughter Recreation Center has received 775 votes, according to election officials.
1:22 p.m. — The City of Charlottesville’s Voter Registration and Elections Office released turnout numbers for locations across the city. As of 1 p.m., the total turnout across the city was 6,182, accounting for 19.3 percent of active registered voters. The number does not include provisional votes or absentee ballots.
1:05 p.m. — The Venable polling location at Trailblazer Elementary School has received 675 votes and 299 provisional ballots, according to election officials. The location had received 235 votes at 9 a.m., according to the City of Charlottesville’s Voter Registration and Elections Office.
11:18 a.m. — The polling location at Slaughter Recreation Center has now received 527 votes, according to election officials. This number does not include provisional ballots.
11:07 a.m. — The polling location at the University’s Miller Center has received 202 votes, according to election officials. This number does not include provisional ballots.
