“Gillespie Triumphs In Pipe Contest”

Second year James T. Gillespie smoked a pipe consistently for one hour, 39 minutes and 32 seconds to win the first Mason-Dixon Intercollegiate Pipe-Smoking Contest hosted in Madison Hall. Another University student landed second place, smoking his pipe for nine less minutes. Gillespie believed he could have puffed his pipe 10 minutes longer if he had not let his pipe go out while he was talking.

“IFC President Calls For Reform Measures”

Chuck Rotgin, President of the Interfraternity Council, attributed the dangerous party scene of the 1960s to attendees of fraternity parties who did not attend the University. To combat this problem, he instructed that fraternity parties were only open to brothers of the fraternity, pledges and those who received written invitations. Members of the University Department of Security would also monitor each party at a discounted rate than what it had been before, $35 per night.

“'Holsinger's Charlottesville': scenes from the past”

Have you ever wondered what the University’s campus looked like over 100 years ago? Rufus W. Holsinger was a photographer that captured 75 pictures around Charlottesville and Grounds, including photos of the Rotunda fire in 1895, the IMP Society parade in 1925, peace celebrations after World War I and more.

“Students seek jobs overseas”

Students found that working abroad in London was the best way to immerse themselves in the culture. They would work as receptionists and secretaries, wait tables, bartend and more. While students experienced British culture first-hand, they also introduced many Europeans to American culture. “We almost spent the Fourth of July in jail for partying too hard,” third-year student Craig Errington said.

Being a resident advisor isn’t just reliving your first year — there are late nights because residents lock themselves out of their rooms and endless prank calls. But there are also lots of rewarding moments, like forming camaraderie with residents through community activities and gaining new skills through responsibilities.

As our first basketball season without Tony Bennett begins, let's look back to the very first basketball season we started with Bennett as head coach. In 2009, Virginia ranked eighth, back when there were only twelve teams in the ACC. Today, there are 17 teams in the ACC.
