Hidden on a strip of Main Street that you’ve probably passed a dozen times, Asian Express appears subtle, almost incognito, blending in with the row of unassuming storefronts. But step inside, and you’re greeted by an inviting coziness that promises more than your average takeout stop. From plump dumplings to savory noodle bowls, Asian Express quietly surprises you, delivering both cuisine and ambiance that’ll leave you wondering why it hadn’t piqued your interest sooner. Neighboring Benny Deluca’s on Main Street past the 10th Street intersection, this place is an easy stroll for a hungry college student. Yes, it is easy to miss but it is also worth every penny — or, dare I say, every dumpling.
Asian Express is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week except Tuesdays when they are closed all day. If you aren’t feeling up for the brief walk from central Grounds, they do also offer delivery, a college student staple. Whether you opt for a pick-up, sit-in or delivery option, this establishment humbly serves up flavors that will keep you coming back. Here’s what went down when I recently stopped in for a taste of their signature offerings.
First up, the Steamed Pork Dumplings. For just $10, you get a plate of pillowy dumplings bursting with juicy pork and hints of ginger. They arrive so hot that steam billows as you open the container, and one bite in, you realize these dumplings are everything one could hope for — tender, flavorful and delightfully juicy. Paired with a salty-savory dipping sauce, they’re almost too good to share. They aren’t reinventing the wheel here, but they’ve certainly perfected it.
Then came the chicken udon noodle priced at $15.50. This dish was a Japanese twist on the classic American soup that Asian Express has managed to make uniquely their own. These thick, chewy noodles, stir-fried in a flavorful sauce, are generously topped with sliced chicken and fresh vegetables that maintain a satisfying crunch. The special Japanese sauce is what really makes this dish — it’s savory and rich, with a hint of sweetness that causes each bite to linger on your taste buds. The bowl is hearty, delicious and worth savoring slowly — though good luck with that once you taste it.
Asian Express’s pièce de résistance makes for the ultimate grand finale — the Sushi and Sashimi Combo Regular at $33.45. Justifying its substantial price, this combo is a sushi lover's dream, boasting six pieces of sushi, nine pieces of sashimi and a rolled maki. Each piece is fresh and expertly crafted, and the sashimi almost melts on your tongue. The variety keeps things interesting — from tuna to salmon to buttery yellowtail, every bite is delicate and clean.
Accompanying the combo is a bowl of miso soup that’s both comforting and rich, offering that perfect hint of umami without overpowering the star of the show. Together, this combo feels like a small luxury, the kind of meal that makes you pause and appreciate the skill behind it.
While the Sashimi Combo is by no means a weekly staple given its price tag, Asian Express has a wide array of other dishes including stir fries and soups which are more amenable to a college student’s budget.
In short, Asian Express is more than its unassuming exterior suggests. It’s an establishment that brings out the best in classic dishes, from dumplings to udon to a delectable sushi combo that all prove the quality to be far more than just “express.” Whether you’re craving that perfect takeout dumpling or need a fix of fresh sashimi, Asian Express serves up a winning mix of flavor, quality and cozy charm.
