After a strong season-opening performance Thursday against No. 15 South Carolina, No. 5 Virginia travelled to the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond for a neutral-site matchup against Old Dominion. The Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) earned a 6-1 win over the Monarchs (2-1, 0-0 SBC), who were coming off of back-to-back wins Thursday over Georgetown and Christopher Newport, dropping only one point over the course of both games.
Virginia opened the overall scoring on the day, taking the doubles point with a 6-4 win on Court 1 by sophomore Dylan Dietrich and junior Mans Dahlberg, followed by a 6-3 win on Court 2 by graduate student James Hopper and freshman Keegan Rice.
Old Dominion took the next point, with Dahlberg losing 3-6, 3-6 on Court 4, three days after losing his first singles match of the season. Rice got the lead back for the Cavaliers, winning his match on Court 3, 7-6, 6-4. Freshman Rafael Jódar quickly followed that up with a 6-3, 7-6 win of his own on Court 2 against a ranked opponent, getting Virginia a two-point lead and putting the hosts in a position to clinch the match with one more point.
That clinching point came on Court 1 from Dietrich, who won his three-set match against No. 70 sophomore Connor van Schalkwyk 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 to take the score to 4-1 with two singles matches unresolved. Ranked as the No. 57 singles player in the country, Dietrich has had an undefeated start to the season, after earning records of 23-7 and 16-7 in singles and doubles last year.
Hopper won in three sets on Court 5 to bring the Cavalier lead to 5-1, before freshman Jangjun Kim wrapped up a 6-3, 7-6 win on Court 6, bringing the final score to 6-1. Virginia dropped a total of four sets on the day, having dropped seven against the Gamecocks (0-1, 0-0 SEC) Thursday.
The Cavaliers will return to action this weekend, as the hosts of a four-team tournament for ITA Kickoff Weekend at Boar’s Head Resort. The tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday, with two matches a day. Virginia will take on Boise State, and No. 19 Alabama will play VCU, with the winners of each match playing for the championship Sunday at 1 p.m., right after the consolation match between the losers.
